ISABEL’S HIGH SCHOOL

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE DECADES

In 1883, the Rt. Dr. Leo Meurin, S.J., Archbishop of Bombay, founded the St. Isabel’s Ladies Charitable Association.  On 9th November 1885, the Ladies Charitable Association, Mazagon, Circle was founded.  The Association started St. Isabel’s Primary School in Matharpacady Village on 9th November 1887, with 40 students and two teachers.  Later St. Isabel’s Primary School was relocated to Tank Square, and thereafter, Mount Road.

In 1931, under the spiritual guidance of then Vicar, Rev.Fr. Manuel Xavier Gomes, Rosary Church, the Ladies Charitable Association purchased a new site at 39, Mount Road and built the present three storeyed High School Building in stages.  In 1949, the first batch of 40 students passed the Matriculation Exam with Miss Daisy Baptista as Principal.  Miss Violet Baptista was entrusted to supervise the Primary section.  The construction of the present High School building, comprising of two wings of ground plus three floors was completed in 1955.

Over the decades, the student strength grew tremendously and was co-educational till April 1968.  From the academic year June 1968 onwards, the School admitted only girl students.  Under Mr. Peter Miranda’s stewardship, St. Isabel’s won accolades as one of the leading Christian Schools in the neighbourhood, educating well over 1500 girl students.

In the past two decades, major renovations and additions have taken place, namely, the colourful Nursery Playground, paved central courtyard with a large outdoor stage, well equipped Information Technology Center, Science Laboratory and Library.  The School provides a Counselling Center for students, Sports Welfare Center, Staff Rooms, Assembly Hall, Lunch Room, etc. for the benefit of the students. Infrastructure and Facilities entails a serene and quite atmosphere away from the hussell and bussell  of the noisy roads that surround the school.

Academics:  A dedicated and well qualified Staff from K.G. to Std. X has ensured excellent results at the SSC Board Exams, thus enhancing learning outcomes   Despite constraints, moral and ethical values are imparted leading to an environment where discipline is fostered.

Moving with the current times, sustained efforts to upgrade the IT Center is vigorously pursued. During the pandemic years digital education was our focus. St Isabel’s School provides inclusive and equitable education. Hence, Our students have excelled in activities like sports, dance and music.  This has helped in the overall development of the Girl Child, where the School has won accolades at the State level.

The present Board of Trustees and our School Headmistresses exhort all Isabellians, ex-Staff and ex-students to always strive to emulate the noble example of our Patroness, St. Isabel.
